Rice Falls to Old Dominion in Series Opener

Rice was held in check through the first five innings, as ODU starter Tommy Gertner kept them hitless as Old Dominion jumped out to a 4-0 lead. But Bradley Gneiting led off the sixth with a single and Hal Hughes drove him in with a triple to get Rice on the board and knock Gertner out of the game. Justin Long singled up the middle, scoring Hughes to cut the deficit in half. After Justin Dunlap reached on a throwing error, Cade Edwards singled to score Long. Two batters later, Connor Walsh tied the game with a single down the right field line that scored Dunlap.
In the bottom of the inning, Roel Garcia struck out the leadoff batter. But a single and a walk put two on base. Robbie Petracci then doubled down the right field line as ODU retook the lead. Brock Gagliardi then knocked Garcia out of the game with a single. Garrett Zaskoda came in and stranded the bases loaded. The Monarchs added five runs in the next two innings to break the game open.
For the record
Rice fell to 14-19-1 overall and 2-10-1 in Conference USA. Old Dominion improved to 25-6 overall and 11-2 in C-USA.
Notes and Stats
• Hal Hughes went 2-for-4, recording his third multi-hit game of the year.
• Hughes recorded his first triple of the season in the fifth inning.
• Roel Garcia struck out seven in 5.1 innings, his second most strikeouts of the year.
• With a single in the sixth inning, Cade Edwards reached base for his team-leading 14th straight game.
