Becker, Garibay Lead Rice to Doubleheader Split at Old Dominion

NORFOLK, Va. — Rice broke out the bats in game two, led by Nathan Becker's two home runs while Guy Garibay led a pitching staff that held Old Dominion's high-powered offense in check as the Owls defeated ODU, 11-2, to split Saturday's doubleheader.
Neither team got on the board in the first inning. In the second, Connor Walsh led off with a double. Two batters later, Nathan Becker went to the opposite field, putting one over the left field wall to give the Owls a 2-0 lead. Guy Garibay then came in and kept the Monarchs at bay. The score stayed that way until the sixth. With one out, Austin Bulman singled and Walsh doubled. That brought up Becker, who blasted a 1-0 pitch deep over the right field wall for his second home run of the game, giving Rice a 5-0 lead.
Old Dominion got two runs back in the bottom half, but in the top of the seventh, Rice broke the game open. Ben Dukes walked and Cade Edwards singled. Braden Comeaux then singled, driving in Dukes. Bradley Gneiting then walked to load the bases. After a field choice, Walsh walked to bring in a run. Will Karp then doubled to left center to score two runs. Two batters later, Hal Hughes singled to score Karp and Walsh. In the inning, Rice scored six times on four hits. Brandon Deskins pitched the final 1.2 innings to close out the game for the Owls. Gneiting, Walsh and Becker all had two hits for Rice, while Becker added five RBI.
In the first game, ODU scored four times in the first two innings to grab an early lead. In the third, Rice used a two-out single and a pair of fielding errors to load the bases. Gneiting got Rice on the board, scoring on a wild pitch. Old Dominion broke the game open in the fourth, scoring six times plus adding one in the fifth. Rice got one back in the seventh, using a pair of singles and a hit by pitch before Walsh drew a bases loaded walk to score Cullen Hannigan.
For the record
Rice improved to 15-20-1 overall and 3-11-1 in Conference USA. Old Dominion fell to 26-7 overall and 12-3 in C-USA.
