Dallas, Texas — Sophomore Harrison Hineline had the best round of his young career, firing a career-low five-under 66 in the second round of the Trinity Forest Invitational, hosted by SMU and played at the par-71, 7,486-yard Trinity Forest Golf Club.
Hineline began his day about as well as one could ask, recording an eagle on the 550-yard, par-5 first hole. After parring the next nine holes, Hineline bogeyed the 11th hole. However, the Boerne, Texas native birdied four of the next five holes before finishing his round with a pair of pars. With his round, Hineline improved to a 34th-place tie at one-over par.
Not only was it the best round of his career, but the 66 tied the fourth-best round since 1990. The 66 was his second career round in the 60's and his sixth career round of par or better. His 36-hole score of 143 was also a career-best.
As a team, Rice is five-under par and tied with Little Rock for fifth-place after firing a seven-under 277, tying its second-best round since 1990. It also ties the fourth-best round to par in that time. The 36-hole score of 563 is the best since 1990, bettering the 566 at the 2008 Pacific Invitational.
Junior Jake Benson is four-under par and tied for seventh-place after firing a 70. It is his fourth round under par this year and the 27th of his career. His 36-hole score of 138 also tied a career-low.
Junior Rishi Kejriwal and senior Nicholas Duggan are also tied for 34th-place with Hineline at one-over par. Kejriwal posted a 70 to tie his career-best 36-hole score of 143 and Duggan posted a 71. Freshman Thomas Bockholt carded a 76 to sit in a 76th-place tie at seven-over par.
"The team showed what we can do today," said Rice head coach Justin Emil. "They had control over their golf ball and executed our game plan very well. The back nine holes they played was very impressive. Harrison (Hineline) came up big for us and was on cruise control out there. There's more where that came from."
Arizona State and host SMU are tied for the tournament lead at 21-under par, 10 strokes in front of Houston. ASU's Alex del Rey leads the individual tournament at 11-under par, three strokes in front of SMU's Justin Thompson.
The final round begins tomorrow at 8 a.m. with Rice teeing off at 8:45 a.m. Rice is paired with student-athletes from UC Davis and individuals and will tee off from the first hole.
