San Antonio, Texas — Junior Jake Benson carded a final round 74 to finish one-under par and tied for fourth-place at the season-opening Lone Star Invitational, hosted by UTSA and played at the par-72, 7,435-yard TPC San Antonio.
With his fourth-place finish, he has finished in the top four in three of his last four tournaments dating back to last year. He also becomes the first Owl to finish in the top five in the season-opening tournament since Michael Buttacavoli finished runner-up at the 2009 UTA/Waterchase Invitational.
Senior Nicholas Duggan and junior Rishi Kejriwal both shot 74's to tie for 22nd-place and 26th-place, respectively. Duggan finished eight-over par while Kejriwal finished nine-over par.
Sophomore Harrison Hineline, playing as an individual, moved up to a 32nd-place tie at 11-over par after posting a 73. Freshman Thomas Bockholt III, playing in his first career tournament, finished in 60th-place at 21-over par after shooting a 78 and sophomore Campbell Gibson took 65th-place at 25-over par after finishing with a 79.
Rice claimed eighth-place at 37-over par, two strokes behind Louisiana-Monroe. The Owls posted a final round 300.
"It was a disappointing finish this week for the team," said Rice head coach Justin Emil. "It was still really good to see Jake in contention right out of the gates. We learned a lot and have an opportunity to tee it right back up on Sunday in Dallas. We'll debrief tomorrow and clean things up for the Trinity Forest Invitational. I believe in this team and know we have a lot of good golf in front of us."
South Alabama defeated Houston and UT-Arlington in a playoff to win the team title. Lipscomb's Nolan Ray earned medalist honors at nine-under par, one stroke in front of Louisiana-Monroe's Guillaume Fanonnel.
Rice returns to the links next Sun.-Tue., Sept. 22-24 when it travels to Dallas for the Trinity Forest Invitational.
