Dallas, Texas — Junior Jake Benson is three-under par and tied for second-place after firing a 68 in the first round of the Trinity Forest Invitational, hosted by SMU and played at the par-71, 7,486-yard Trinity Forest Golf Club.
Benson is one stroke behind leader Alex Del Rey of Arizona State.
The Nottingham, England native, began the day with pars on his first four holes. He birdied the 14th hole, but made the turn at one-over par after bogeys on 16 and 18. He got back to even with a birdie on the first hole, and then got under par with one at the fifth. Benson then recorded his first eagle of the year on the seventh hole to get to three-under par.
The 68 was his first round in the 60's this year and the seventh of his career. It is also his third round of par or better this year and the 26th of his career.
Senior Nicholas Duggan is tied for 25th-place at one-over par after posting a 72. Junior Rishi Kejriwal and freshman Thomas Bockholt are tied for 37th-place after carding a two-over par 73 and sophomore Harrison Hineline eighth posted a six-over 77 to sit in a 79th-place tie.
Rice is in sixth-place at two-over par. The Owls posted a 286 to sit two strokes behind fifth-place Houston.
"We hung in there and stayed patient through some windy conditions today," said Rice head coach Justin Emil. "When all five guys shoot par or better on the final nine holes it makes a huge difference. I'm proud of them for staying patient out there after a tough front nine."
Arizona State and host SMU are tied for the tournament lead at five-under par, two strokes in front of UC-Davis.
The second round begins tomorrow at 8 a.m. Rice is paired with student athletes from Ball State and UTSA and will tee off from the first hole.
