Hicks Places Second in Discus at C-USA Championships

Three Owls qualify for Sunday's finals
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Rice freshman thrower Nick Hicks placed second in the men's discus and the Owls earned four qualifying spots for Sunday's finals to highlight day three of the Conference USA Outdoor Championships Saturday at Charlotte.
Hicks, from San Marcos, Texas, battled torrential rain but still managed to record a mark of 48.74m (159-11) to earn a silver medal and eight team points for the Owls. Hicks, who placed fifth in the hammer throw on Friday, recorded his top throw in the discus on his fifth attempt in the pouring rain after fouling on three consecutive prior attempts.
The Owls also earned berths in Sunday's finals with a pair of spots in both the 1500m and the 800m. Senior Reagan Olguin qualified in both events, placing fifth in the 800m (1:52.42) and seventh in the 1500m (3:59.25). In addition, Alex Topini qualified in the 1500m (4th-3:57.08) while Jason Bugg punched his finals ticket with a sixth place finish in the 800m (1:52.61).
To close out the afternoon, Andrew Abikhaled ran a personal best 9:10.92 to place sixth overall in the 3000m steeplechase while teammate Adolfo Carvalho also earned points with a seventh place finish (9:20.25) in the event.
Rice will enter Championship Sunday tied for second place overall (37 points) with UTEP and UTSA, while Charlotte is in first with 67 points.
