Freshman vaulter places third at Charlotte
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Rice Owls men's track and field squad closed out the fourth and final day of the Conference USA Outdoor Championships on Sunday, finishing seventh overall with 62 points.
Rice began the day by getting an all-conference performance from freshman Natan Rivera. The vaulter, from San Salvador, El Salvador, cleared 5.11m (16-0.25) before fouling at 5.16m. Rivera was the 2019 indoor champion and carried that momentum into the outdoor season with victories at the Texas Relays and J. Fred Duckett Twilight.
Freshman teammate Thomas Pratt placed fourth in the pole vault, setting a season-best mark by clearing 5.06m (16-7.25) to give the Owls 11 points in the vault.
Rice also got points from Alex Topini (1500m-5th-3:56.05), Dane Stolsig (javelin--4th61.98m), and Charlie Card-Chidlers (javelin-7th-55.44m).
Host Charlotte claimed the men's title with 155 points while Middle Tennessee (117 pts.) and UTSA (100 pts.) finished second and third, respectively.
The Owls will next await to see who qualifies for the NCAA West Prelims, which will take place May 23-25 in Sacramento, Calif.
