Men’s T&F Wraps Up Stay at NCAA West Prelims

FAYETTEVILLE – The Rice men's track and field team closed out the week's competition at the NCAA West Prelims in Fayetteville, Ark., with two advancing on to the championship meet.
Jack Greaves and Ty Hampton (javelin) will represent the Owls at the 2026 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
Juan Marais closed out his impressive season in 18th in the discus with a final throw of 55.66m.
Andrew Murray finished his career in 26th in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 8:53.44.
DAY ONE NOTES
On his final throw of the night, Greaves jumped into seventh in the javelin with a mark of 72.28m to earn a spot at the championship meet. Hampton advanced off his opening throw of 71.64m. All qualifiers out of the region threw 70-plus meter marks through harsh weather conditions, on top of the final flight starting after 11 p.m.
In the 400m hurdles, Edward Bocock finished 28th with a time of 51.29 to close his freshman season.
Sultan Bakare ended his season after qualifying in the hammer throw and the shot put. Bakare was 39th in the hammer with a throw of 58.66m.

"Overall, this was a good experience here for everyone. Hopefully, Juan was able to take a lot away from this meet. It takes a while to be able to handle a meet like this, and he did much better this year than last. The championship atmosphere makes for a unique experience. This was a great learning experience and a good step forward. Andrew closed his career today with the second-fastest steeple he's ever run. Truly an outstanding race in an outstanding field. Overall, this was a very good week for us. Edward and Sultan also got great experience here, and we can't say enough about Ty and Jack making it to Eugene. Looking forward to watching them compete in two weeks."
