HOUSTON – The Rice men's track and field team had several impressive showings over three days' worth of competitions at the Camreon Burrell Invite at UH and at Texas A&M's Alumni Muster.
Andrew Murray had a tremendous showing, setting the meet record at A&M in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 8:47.27, moving into 34th in the NCAA West Region. Brandon Martz set a personal best time as well to finish second in the event.
Juan Marais also set the meet record twice at A&M in the discus, with a throw of 58.05m on his final attempt.
Luke Ivy set a personal best in the long jump with a mark of 7.26m to finish fourth in the event.
Over at UH, freshman Edward Bocock set a personal best in the 400m hurdles with a time of 51.09s to win the event. The marks moved him into 25th for the NCAA West Region. He later matched the same mark at A&M two days later.
Sultan Bakare set a personal best to finish second in the hammer throw, with a throw of 61.79m. He was also second in the shot put with a throw of 18.02m. Bakare went on to win the shot put at A&M with a throw of 17.16m.
Jack Greaves claimed the javelin title with a throw of 68.91m.
Post Meet Reaction - Head Coach Jon Warren
"The highlight of the meet was Andrew Murray's steeple. An outstanding job to set a meet record off a pretty nice personal best time, and on top of it getting into the regional conversation. Really proud of his performance. Edward had a great weekend as well, exactly tying his result from Thursday today. Bit of an oddity, but it moves him up the regional leaderboard as well. Juan threw really well today, also setting a meet record. He fouled what would have been a nice personal best too. Sultan also placed really well, competing both at A&M and Houston this weekend. Christian ran a good quarter in his first race back, and show be in great shape going into conference. Luke also looked really good for the partial decathlon, with a tremendous long jump. Overall, we had a very good weekend, and I look forward to seeing everything come together in Denton."
