THIS WEEK: The Rice soccer team is back home for its Conference USA regular season finale this Friday. The Owls host league power North Texas at Holloway Field on Friday (Nov. 1) at 7 pm.
FUN & GAMES AT HOLLOWAY FIELD: Don't miss your last chance to see your Owls seniors at Senior Night! The soccer action on the field is red-hot, but Berry's Ices Food Truck will be on site to keep things cool with some tasty treats.
QUICK ON THE OWLS: Rice is 9-5-2 overall but a closer look at the team's rugged schedule is in order. The Owls' five losses have been to Alabama, Oregon State, South Florida, SMU and Florida Atlantic – who entered this weekend with a combined record of 54-21-7 (.701). If you prefer the cold, hard, math of the NCAA Ratings Power Index, then consider the average R.P.I. for those five opponents is 39.2. Rice had a gritty performance to begin C-USA action with a 1-0 victory over a Charlotte team that is near the top of the league standings. The Owls picked up four points in a pair of C-USA road games (Sept. 26-29) by rallying from a 2-0 deficit to tie Middle Tennessee 2-2, then turning right around and winning at UTSA 1-0. The Blue & Gray picked up another C-USA road point with a draw at LA Tech (Oct. 13). The Blue & Gray used late heroics to defeat UAB, Marshall and Western Kentucky at home. Last weekend Rice scored six goals to split a pair of C-USA road games at FIU and FAU.
STANDINGS WATCH: The Owls are a steady 6-1-2 through the first nine games of C-USA action. Rice has 20 points in league matches to hold sole possession of fourth place in the conference standings. Mathematically the Blue & Gray can finish no worse than fourth, but still could climb in the standings depending on other outcomes on Friday. Rice is a single point behind second place teams Charlotte and North Texas (both 7-2-0, 21 points). FAU holds first place in the standings with 22 points.
HAIL SENIORS!: A total of five Owl seniors Maya Hoyer, Haley Kostyshyn, Lianne Mananquil, Erin Mikeska and Louise Stephens are making their final competitive appearance Friday at Holloway Field. The quintet is having their best collective year yet by accounting for 16 goals and 10 assists, as well as 34 saves for Hoyer in-goal. The five players, plus senior manager Julia Greenberg, will be honored for their exemplary service just prior to Friday's match.
COACH'S CORNER: Rice soccer is under the direction of head coach Brian Lee, who is in his first season at the helm of the program. A 2018 finalist for National Coach of the Year and with 25 years of experience as a Division I head coach, Lee enters this week's game with a career record of 296-193-57. Lee's Rice coaching staff includes Megan Kinneman, Travis Curson and Allysha Chapman, all in their first year with the Owl program. Coach Lee's weekly video preview is available at the above link, and in this latest edition he also talks about the current Owl seniors!
SERIES HISTORY VS. NORTH TEXAS: North Texas leads the all-time series with Rice 6-3-2. The teams met twice last season, with the Mean Green claiming a 1-0 home win in Denton and a 2-0 decision in the opening round of the C-USA Championship in Norfolk, Va. North Texas is making its first trip to Holloway Field since 2016, where Rice holds a 2-1-1 edge in the series. The Owls have not beaten North Texas since a 2-0 victory in the 2014 C-USA Championship Final. Check out the online soccer series vs. North Texas here.
NEXT WEEK: After Friday's North Texas game the Owls are off to the annual C-USA Championship, scheduled for Nov. 6-10 in Denton. The Owls can do no worse than be the tournament's No. 4 seed.
