Benson earns second top 20 finish of the season
Dallas, Texas — Rice closed the Trinity Forest Invitational with a five-over par 289 to finish seven-over par in 10th-place. The tournament was played at the par-71, 7,330-yard Trinity Forest Golf Club.
Sophomore Jake Benson fired his third straight round under par, carding a 70 to tie for 15th-place at five-under par. His 54-hole score of 208 is a career-low. It is his second top 20 finish of the year and the fourth of his career. He also has five rounds of par or better on the year and 13 in his career.
Freshman Harrison Hineline, playing in his first career collegiate tournament, posted a 73 to finish four-over par and tied for 45th-place.
Sophomore Rishi Kejriwal tied for 50th-place at five-over par after posting a 75 and his 54-hole score of 218 is a season-best. Junior Nicholas Duggan carded his third straight 73 to finish six-over par, tied for 56th-place.
Senior Grant Rogers shot a 73 to tie for 64th-place at eight-over par and freshman Austin Escamilla, playing as an individual, had the best round of his short career, firing a 70 for his first career round under par to tie for 78th-place at 15-over par.
"There were a lot of positives this week," said Rice head coach Justin Emil. "We prepared well for each round and had a solid game plan for the course. Jake (Benson) had a good week and got a top 15 (finish), finishing under par for the week. As a team, we left a lot of shots out there and when the conditions were as they were you have to post a low round. We are still looking for a break out day and will go to work these next 10 days to prepare for the Maridoe Invitational."
Baylor won the tournament at 28-under par, one stroke in front of SMU. North Texas' Thomas Rosenmueller earned medalist honors at 13-under par, two strokes in front of Justin Warren of Little Rock.
Rice will take a two-week break before returning to the links at the Maridoe Invitational in Carrollton, Texas, Oct. 6-8.
