Benson leads Owls in 31st-place
Carrollton, Texas — Rice golf is in 14th-place at 34-over par after one round of the Maridoe Intercollegiate, played at the par-70, 7,043-yard Maridoe Golf Club.
Sophomore Jake Benson leads the Owls in a tie for 31st-place at five-over par after opening with a 75. Senior Grant Rogers carded a nine-over 79 to sit in a 59th-place tie.
Junior Nicholas Duggan and freshman Harrison Hineline are tied for 61st-place after posting a 10-over par 80 and sophomore Rishi Kejriwal posted an 11-over par 81 to tie for 67th-place.
"We just had too many big numbers today," said Rice head coach Justin Emil. "We knew this golf course was going to be difficult from off the fairway and that's where we were most of the day. There's still two more rounds. We'll go work on it and be ready tomorrow."
North Texas leads the tournament lead at six-over par, one stroke in front of SMU. North Texas' Thomas Rosenmueller, UT-Arlington's Paul Gonzalez and States Fort of Coastal Carolina are tied for the individual lead at two-under par.
Rice tees off in the second round tomorrow at 10:20 a.m. CT. The Owls are paired with student-athletes from Boise State and various individuals.
