AUSTIN -- The University of Texas soccer team rode a pair of first half goals for a 2-1 victory over the visiting Rice Owls in the opening match of the 2017 season for both teams Friday night in Austin.
Texas jumped on the scoreboard just 25 second into the contest, finding a narrow lane in the Owl defense for a 1-0 advantage. Rice would go on to manufacture two 1-v-1 attempts on the Texas goal in the first half that were both saved by the Longhorn keeper. The Owls also built a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks, but a second Texas goal in the 37th minute stretched the margin to 2-0 before the intermission.
Rice battled back for a goal in the second half to pull within one. In the 60th minute, junior Marissa Topolski launched a long pass down the middle of the field where sophomore Lianne Mananquil eluded a pair of defenders and shot it to the back of the UT net. Mananquil shared the match lead among all players with three shots. In the final tale of the tape Rice and Texas were tied in shots (12), corner kicks (4) and saves (6).
The Owls next return to action on Sunday (Aug. 20) for the team's first home game of the season. Rice hosts state foe Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a 6 pm start time at Holloway Field.
