
Youth Leads Owls in C-USA Championship Second Round

TEXARKANA, Ark. -- After a weather delay forced play to start half an hour late on Monday morning, teams across the Conference USA Championship posted higher scores in the second round of action. The Owls ended the day in 12th place with a 297-302--599 (+23) at the Texarkana Country Club.
Rice's 112 pars rank third in the field through 36 holes and the team's 3.13 average on the par-72, 6,869-yard course's par-3 holes ranks fourth in the field.
Sophomore Alex Levy continues to lead the Owls in 30th place overall as he carded a 73-75--148 (+4). He carded three birdies on Monday to pair with 11 pars, and shot -2 on the back nine for the day.
Freshman Mitchell Meissner followed just one stroke back with a 75-74--149 (+5) to stand in 33rd place. After leading the field with 15 pars on Sunday, the rookie added 10 more to accompany three birdies in the second round. His 25 pars through 36 holes rank fourth in the field.
James Lee played the back nine even to begin his day and finished the round in 41st place at 74-76--150 (+6). The junior tallied three of his five birdies in the second round.
Senior Tommy Economou also took a two-stroke bump from Sunday's score as he wrapped up the day in 52nd place with a 75-77--152 (+8). He holed 12 pars and a birdie on Monday after sinking four birdies in Sunday's opening round.
Kevin Reilly rounded out the squad with a 75-81--156 (+12), placing the sophomore 62nd with 18 holes to play. After carding one birdie in the opening round, he sank two on consecutive holes on Monday -- on the par-5 second hole and par-3 third.
North Texas took over the team lead over UAB by six strokes at 569 (-7). The Mean Green carded a 291 to make up eight strokes over the Blazers on the day. Southern Miss also crept into a tie for second place with UAB.
The Owls stand two strokes behind 11th-place Florida Atlantic and five back from ninth-place Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky. Rice holds a two-stroke edge on 13th-place Marshall heading into Tuesday's round.
NT's Jason Roets maintained a lead at 65-74--139 (-5), one stroke ahead of Southern Miss' Drew Kirby and UTEP's Martin Simonsen.
The final round of stroke play tees off at 8 a.m. on Tuesday morning. The top four teams then square off in match play to determine the league champion on Wednesday. Rice tees off with FAU and Marshall on the 10th hole beginning at 8:50 a.m.
