The 68th-ranked Rice Owls women's tennis team started slowly but came on strong to down Sam Houston State 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium on the Rice campus.
"I was proud of the way they competed after a tough loss the day before at Texas," women's head coach Elizabeth Schmidt said. "We had a slow start, but coming back to win the double point was a key. We showed great heart as a team."
Sam Houston started quickly, taking the #1 doubles match and held the lead in the other two pairings before the Owls mounted a comeback to take the point. Jessica Jackson and Varsha Shiva-Shankar rallied to take their match, 8-5 and then #3 double teammates Emily Braid and Alex Rasch stormed back to take their match 8-6 and put the Owls up 1-0 on the afternoon.
Jackson and Shiva-Shakar then dispatched of their singles opponents to move the lead to 3-0, followed by Rebecca Lin who clinched the match with her win in #4 singles. Rasch and Ana Guzman also picked up wins in singles for the Owls, who ran their record to 3-1 with the win.
The Owls will be back in action on Saturday and Sunday, when they host a pair of matches. They will meet Texas-Arlington on Saturday at 1:30 and Texas State at 11 am on Sunday.
