HOUSTON — The Rice women's tennis team secured a weekend sweep with a 4-0 victory over Louisiana Tech on Sunday at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
No. 54 Rice improved to 10-5 overall and 6-1 at home. The Owls swept both Tulsa on Friday (7-0) and Louisiana Tech on Sunday (4-0) to finish the weekend unbeaten on their home courts.
Rice came out strong in doubles, securing the point with a dominant performance. The duo of Francesca Maguina and Ema Mravcova opened play with a 6-0 win over Maria Tsironi and Alice Brook. Darya Schwartzman and Uma Bakaityte followed with another 6-0 victory over Zoie Epps and Isabella Walker to clinch the doubles point. Divna Ratkovic and Daniela Chica led 4-1 on court three when play was halted.
In singles, Bakaityte put Rice ahead early with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Diana Starodubtseva. Nithesa Selvaraj followed with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over June Vigneron. Maguina clinched the match for the third time this season, defeating Tsironi 6-2, 6-2.
Play was halted on the remaining courts once the match was decided. Schwartzman led 3-2 in the second set after dropping the first set 6-3. Ratkovic held a 6-2, 4-2 advantage over Skoric, while Mravcova led 6-0, 4-5 on court six.
Rice head coach Elizabeth Schmidt said the team's momentum has continued to build.
"From the Tulane win last weekend to both matches this weekend, it was a solid display of fight and mental toughness by the team," Schmidt said. "Everyone continues to grow and embrace the process, which is great to see, especially as we head into the home stretch of the season."
The Owls will travel to California next week to face UC San Diego on March 27 and San Diego on March 28 in San Diego, California.
