Owls Open ITA College Tennis Weekend with Win

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The Rice women's tennis team defeated UC San Diego 4-0 on Friday morning at the Northview Tennis Courts.
Rice secured the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. Daniela Chica and Divna Ratkovic opened doubles play with a 6-0 victory over Carling Allaye-Chan and Hana Gamracy. On court one, Uma Bakaityte and Darya Schwartzman followed with a 6-2 win against Olivia Allegre and Julia Visaya.
Francesca Maguina and Ema Mravcova led 4-3 on court two when doubles play was halted.
In singles, Mravcova quickly put Rice ahead 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Allison Lian on court five. Schwartzman extended the lead with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Allegre.
Ratkovic clinched the match for the second time this season, defeating Alisa Lansky 7-5, 6-1.
In the remaining matches, Maguina trailed 6-4 but led 5-4 in the second set on court three when play stopped. Nithesa Selvaraj had forced a third set after winning the second 6-0 following a 6-3 first-set loss. Chica led Visaya 6-2, 4-5 on court four.
The Owls will face San Diego on Saturday afternoon to close out the ITA College Tennis Weekend.
