Owls Drop Thriller to No. 46 San Diego

SAN DIEGO – The Rice women's tennis team fell 4-3 in a thriller to No. 46 San Diego on Saturday.
The No. 54 Rice Owls (11-6) are now 5-2 on the road this season. Both singles and doubles were decided on the final court.
In doubles, Darya Schwartzman and Uma Bakaityte defeated Anni Moll and Hannah Read, 6-1. San Diego responded when Francesca Maguina and Ema Mravcova fell 6-2 to Vilma Krebs-Hyllested and Maria Shmakova. The Toreros clinched the doubles point on court three when Divna Ratkovic and Daniela Chica fell 7-6 to Charlotte Keitel and Kristina Nordikyan.
In singles, Maguina put the Owls on the board with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Ines Leon. No. 109 Read followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Ratkovic on court two. Bakaityte then defeated Krebs-Hyllested 7-5, 7-5. Mravcova kept the Owls alive with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Shmakova.
San Diego clinched the match in a three-set thriller when Schwartzman fell 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 to Keitel.
The Owls will return home to host South Florida on Friday, April 3, for Senior Day at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
