Owls Win 4-3 Thriller at Tulane

NEW ORLEANS – Francesca Maguina rallied in the third set to clinch the deciding point as the No. 56 Rice women's tennis team defeated Tulane 4-3 on Sunday in New Orleans.
Rice (8-4) secured its seventh doubles point of the season and improved to 7-0 when winning the doubles point.
The Owls opened doubles play with a victory on court three as Daniela Chica and Divna Ratkovic defeated Natalia Fantini and Natalia Perez, 6-4. Tulane evened the doubles competition when Campbell Ricci and Summer Chandler topped Darya Schwartzman and Uma Bakaityte 6-3 on court one.
Rice clinched the doubles point on court two, where Ema Mravcova and Maguina defeated Leigh Van Zyl and Micah Pierce, 6-4.
Tulane tied the match at 1-1 in singles when Perez defeated Bakaityte 6-3, 6-3. The Green Wave then took a 2-1 lead after Pierce topped Chica 6-3, 7-5 on court six.
Rice answered with back-to-back wins to regain the advantage. Ratkovic defeated Chandler 6-4, 6-7, 6-1 before Schwartzman battled to a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory on court one to give the Owls a 3-2 lead.
Tulane evened the match again when Fantini defeated Mravcova 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.
Maguina clinched the match for Rice on court four, rallying from a 4-2 deficit in the third set to defeat Van Zyl 5-7, 7-5, 6-4 for her second match-clinching win of the season.
Rice returns home to face Tulsa at 11 a.m. on March 20 at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
