Owls Secure 7-0 Shutout against Tulsa

HOUSTON – No. 54 Rice swept Tulsa 7-0 on Friday at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
The Owls improved to 9-5 overall and 5-1 at home. Ema Mravcova clinched the match for Rice for the second time this season.
Rice secured the doubles point with wins on courts one and two. The No. 58 duo of Darya Schwartzman and Uma Bakaityte opened with a 6-1 victory over Maria Santos and Carolina Alonso. Francesca Maguina and Mravcova followed with a 6-3 win against Tayla Wilmot and Coral Valle. Divna Ratkovic and Daniela Chica led 4-3 on court three when play was halted.
In singles, Schwartzman set the tone with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Santos. Maguina added a 7-6, 6-1 victory against Alice Baba.
Mravcova clinched the match with a three-set win over Valle, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.
Play continued after the clinch, with all remaining matches going to three sets. Ratkovic rallied past Isabella Basson 5-7, 6-2, 6-1. Bakaityte followed with a 6-7, 6-3, 6-2 comeback win over Alonso. Fernanda Martinez closed out the sweep with a 3-6, 6-0, 7-5 win on court six.
Rice wraps up the weekend Sunday at 11 a.m. against Louisiana Tech.
