The Rice soccer team congratulates Owl volunteer assistant coach Craig Waibel and the hometown Houston Dynamo on winning the MLS Cup Sunday (Nov. 18) in Washington D.C. Waibel and the Dynamo bring a second-straight MLS championship to the city of Houston after a thrilling 2-1 cone-from-behind victory over the New England Revolution.
Waibel, who started on defense for the Dynamo in the MLS Final and assisted on the game-winning goal, also serves as a volunteer coach for the Owls' soccer team. The 31-year old Portland, Ore., native completed his ninth year in the MLS. He began his Rice coaching connection through his wife, Julie, who works in the Athletics Department as the assistant director of stewardship and special events.
"The team is absolutely thrilled for Craig and the Dynamo," said Rice head coach Chris Huston. "He played a great game and it's terrific to see the hard work he put in all season long rewarded with another championship.
"Craig's coaching is extremely beneficial and it means a lot to Rice to have him on our bench," Huston added. "His influence was very important, and not just that he is an MLS star pursuing a professional championship. The fact that he volunteered his time to help coach our players the whole season set an example of what it really means to appreciate the sport of soccer. He doesn't just play at an elite level, he is willing to teach the next generation of players and give them the benefit of his experience... all while asking for nothing in return. Rice soccer knew Craig was a champion long before this latest MLS Cup. Congratulations Craig and the Dynamo."
