HOUSTON - Freshman Anne Candee scored a goal and assisted on two others and the Rice defense teamed to record its second shutout in as many games as the Owls' soccer team notched a 4-0 victory over visiting Texas State Sunday afternoon at the Rice Track/Soccer Stadium.
After recording its first shutout of the season against Texas Southern on Thursday, Rice extended the scoreless streak another 90 minutes with a solid effort Sunday. The Owls jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first half and never let up on the offensive pressure. Rice held a 9-4 lead on shots in the second period and a 24-9 advantage for the game.
"I thought the girls did a great job," said Rice head coach Chris Huston. "They came out and did what they had to do, then they finished a game which is something the coaches wanted to see. We definitely have the ability to win games, we just have to keep the confidence to put the games away."
Candee opened the scoring early in the contest. In the game's third minute the Dallas native fielded a long crossing pass from Caitlin Robbins on the left side and blasted a shot to the left of the goal. The ball struck the left post, but Candee opportunistically played the carom and found the back of the net with a follow-up attempt. It was her second goal of the young season and second in as many starts.
A freshman forward from Dallas, Candee was also the catalyst on the Owls' second score. In the 11th minute Candee found Vanessa Serrano open from inside of 10 feet and Serrano scored her first goal of the season with a header that beat the keeper to the right side.
In the 41st minute Candee had the ball in traffic in front of the net and took a hard shot on goal. The Bobcat keeper made a diving save and deflected the ball away. Candee may not have made her second goal of the game, but the Owls still had an opportunity that was only a rebound away.
"Their keeper made a pretty good play on it," Candee surmised, "but Kelly (Brolan) was right there and she was all over it. She really picked us up."
Senior Kelly Brolan, who had came off the bench minutes before, corralled the loose ball Texas State had deflected away and quickly took her only shot of the day. The result was Brolan's first career goal and it stretched the lead to 3-0.
"Anne shot it as hard as humanly possible," Brolan said. "All I had to do was follow it. That was my first Rice goal. It was exciting."
The Blue and Gray added one final goal in the second half to close out the scoring. In the 79th minute Junior Maria Fadool converted on a shot from nine feet out after another Robbins' pass. It was Fadool's second goal of the season and second in as many games.
Rice freshman goalkeeper Adriene Giese was relieved after 80 minutes by Amy McClintock who worked the rest of the shutout. Giese made a total of six saves on the day as the Blue and Gray improved to 3-1-0 on the season. Texas State fell to 0-5-0.
The Owls conclude their season-opening five-game homestand with a match against Stephen F. Austin on Sunday. Start time with the Lady Jacks will be 7 pm at the Rice Track/Soccer Stadium.
