Bio
Blain Padgett passed away on March 2, 2018. An immediate contributor as a true freshman in 2015, and dominant force as a starter in 2016, he remained a leader in 2017 after an injury cut his season short. His leadership continued to energize the Owls in the offseason during 2018 as the team transitioned to a new coaching staff.
His name will remain on our roster along with those who joined him at Rice as freshmen in 2015 as that class completes their eligibility this fall. His spirit and passion for the game of football will be a constant source of inspiration each and every day to the Rice Football family.
2017
Season was cut short due to an injury after three games... Preseason All C-USA third team by Athlon and Phil Steele on defense and a first-time pick by Steele at deep snapper... C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll (2016 & 2017).
2016
True sophomore who led the defensive line with 41 tackles and was second with 5.5 TFL... Also served as the deep snapper on punts and led team with six tackles on punt returns in addition to setting up the Owls' second TD at Charlotte by recovering a fumbled punt... Shared his career first sack vs. North Texas and finished with two on the year.... Credited with a career-high seven tackles (six unassisted) at Army.... Made his second career start in the opener at WKU and was credited with five tackles.
2015
True freshman who was pressed into immediate duty after injuries on the line and has contributed tackles in seven of eight games... Recorded 14 tackles including two TFL... Made his first career start vs. Southern Miss... Credited with a season-best three tackles vs. Army.
Hardin Jefferson High School
Defensive MVP and All-District 9-4A DII pick for coach Dwayne Dubois... Named to the Beaumont Enterprise Super Gold Team... One of two Hawks to sign with the Owls, joining defensive tackle Roe Wilkins... Credited with 145 tackles as a senior, including 20 for loss (eight sacks)... Had 417 tackles, 24 sacks, blocked four punts and two PATs in his career... Four-year starter... District champion in shot and discus as a junior... National Honor Society member.
