The Story
After winning the coin toss, Rice needed just three plays to get on the board. Ochoa, starting for an injured Jacurri Brown, rushed untouched 55 yards for the game's first score. After forcing a punt, Ochoa scored again, this time from 52 yards to give Rice a 14-0 lead. Rice forced another punt. But after crossing midfield, D'Andre Hardeman, Jr. fumbled, and Florida Atlantic recovered. FAU made them pay, as Caden Veltkamp hit Brandon Hoch for a 30-yard score. After Rice went three-and-out, Charlie Durkin's punt was blocked out of the back of the end zone for a safety. Florida Atlantic took the free kick and went 75 yards, scoring on an Easton Messer two-yard run. On the ensuing possession, Rice went for it on fourth-and-one from its own 34. But Hardeman was stopped short, and FAU took over. Florida Atlantic needed just five plays to score, this time on a Messer two-yard catch. Rice, however, answered, as Ochoa scored on a 74-yard touchdown, his third of the day, to pull Rice within 23-21 at halftime.
FAU opened the second half going 75 yards in nine plays, scoring on a Messer five-yard run. Rice answered, this time by Max Mosey, who ran 41 yards up the middle for his first score of the season. But FAU answered right back, as Veltkamp connected with Messer for a 68-yard touchdown. Rice again responded. Patrick Crayton, Jr., led Rice 75 yards, capped off by Hardeman's one-yard touchdown. The home Owls responded and marched right down the field to extend the lead following a one-yard rushing touchdown. On the second play of the following Rice drive, Ochoa broke free once again, this time for a 69-yard rushing touchdown, bringing Rice back within two points at 44-42 at the end of the third quarter. Both sides stalled on offense over the next couple of possessions, until Florida Atlantic had an 82-yard punt return for a touchdown with 3:37 remaining in the game to give the home Owls a 51-42 advantage. Ochoa found an immediate answer, this time by air, with a 71-yard touchdown pass to Braylen Walker to bring Rice within two points again at 51-49 with 2:51 remaining. Rice forced a three-and-out on the following FAU drive, setting up Rice at the 31-yard line with 2:06 to go. Rice got down to the Florida Atlantic 37-yard line, but Tommy Bauchiero's 55-yard field goal fell short with 45 seconds remaining, as FAU took a knee for the win.
