HOUSTON – The Rice men's track and field team shined on their home track, with many season bests and event titles at the 43rd annual Victor Lopez Classic at the Wendel D. Ley track.
Ty Hampton had a stellar return in the javelin, winning the event with the seventh-best mark in the NCAA of 74.19m, which leads the American. Jack Greaves also had a great season-debut with a throw of 69.19m, the third best in the American.
Sultan Bakare improved his conference-leading shot put mark with a throw of 18.27m to finish third in the event. He was also fourth in the hammer throw with a throw of 58.87m.
The Rice steeplechase crew had a 1-2-3 showing, led by the conference leading time of 8:57.86 by Andrew Murray, while Brandon Martz and Riley Kuhlman finished right behind.
Edward Bocock had a tremendous race in the 400m hurdles, winning the event with a time of 51.71s.
Post Meet Reaction - Head Coach Jon Warren
"This was a really good start to the season. We had a really good meet. Edward ran fantastic today, really impressive to see. Juan had a great throw in the discus, while Ty and Jack had a great season debut in the javelin. All three of them probably just qualified for regionals from this weekend alone. Sultan had another impressive weekend and has been great to see this whole year. I thought our steeplechase had an impressive night, with Andrew Murray leading the pack for that event. Overall, we had a really good meet all throughout and I look forward to seeing how we build upon this for the coming weeks."
