Owls Drop Finale to Bulldogs
3/9/2025 5:38:00 PM | Baseball
Next Up: Texas A&M Corpus Christi 6:35 Monday
Reckling Park: Blaine Brown was 3x4 with his first career home run and three RBI, but Rice was held in check by Yale's Jack Ohman as the Bulldogs closed out the weekend series with a 7-4 win on Sunday.
How it Happened: Yale jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first but Rice took advantage of a pair of Yale errors in the bottom of the frame to answer with three of its own. Michael Zito reached on an error to lead off the game for Rice and Hiram Bocachica Jr. followed with a walk. The Owls executed a double steal on a strikeout and Zito came into score on an errant through by the Yale catcher. After a second strikeout, Brown blasted his first home run off the Reckling scoreboard to score Bocachica and give the Owls a 3-2 lead. Yale made that lead short-lived, scoring twice in the top of the second to take a 4-3 lead, and that margin held up over the next four innings, and Ohman and Rice reliever Marco Fuentes traded scoreless innings. Yale padded the lead with a single run in the seventh and two in the eighth. After Ohman exited after seven innings and 103 pitches, Rice looked to mount a charge against the Yale bullpen. The first three Owls in the eighth reached, with Zito opening with a walk, Bocachica doubling and Landon West working Rice's second walk of the inning. After a strikeout, Brown beat out a single to second base to score Zito and pull Rice within three, but the Owls could not draw any closer.
Up Next: Rice wraps up a stretch of six games in seven days by hosting Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Monday a 6:35 p.m.
