Rice heads back on the road Thursday night for a battle against Charlotte. The Owls will return home to Holloway Field Sunday afternoon against South Florida.
Last Time Out
The Owls settled for a 1-1 draw last Thursday night at Holloway Field against UTSA in a battle of two of the top teams in the American standings. Naija Bruckner scored Rice's lone goal, her third of the season.
Chancey's Chances
Leah Chancey has continued her offensive production for the 2025 season, already netting eight goals with eight assists. She currently ranks first in the American in five major offensive categories: assists per game, game winning goals, points per game, shot accuracy and total assists. Her 24 points this season ranks ninth in the NCAA and her eight assists rank fifth in the nation. Her 2.00 points per game rank seventh in the NCAA. Chancey was the 2024 American Conference Offensive Player of the Year.
Rice vs. Charlotte
This is the 12th meeting in the series, with the Owls holding an 8-3 all-time lead. Charlotte has won the last two meetings, while Rice has won all four regular-season matchups in Charlotte.

Rice is coming off back-to-back weeks of being ranked No. 25 for Sept. 16 through Sept. 30. Rice was one of two American schools to be ranked at during the season (Memphis). Rice entered the poll for the first time since 2021. Rice also debuted at 40 in the initial RPI of the season, the highest initial RPI ranking in program history.
Lee Earns Win 350
During Rice's 3-2 win over Oklahoma State on August 28, head coach Brian Lee recorded with 350th career win as a head coach. Coach Lee has been a head coach for 32 seasons with stops at Furman (11 seasons) and LSU (14 seasons) before taking over Rice in 2019 (7th season). Lee currently ranks 18th in wins by active DI coaches.
HTX Takeover in the RGV
The Owls had an offensive explosion at UTRGV, dropping six goals in the shutout win. The Owls' six goals are the most in a game since scoring eight against TSU during the 2020-21 season. The six goals are the most scored on the road since Rice had seven at Old Dominion in 2017.
Two Up, Two Down
Mariana Elizondo has opened the 2025 season on fire; netting goals in back-to-back matches, both being game-winning goals. The two goals tie a season high, when she scored twice back in the 2022 season (also the last time she scored before the 2025 campaign).
Take a Chance(y) On Me
Chancey checked into the TopDrawerSoccer Top 100 list to open the 2025 season at No. 67. Last season, Chancey led the conference in goals (nine), points (22), shot accuracy (.528), shots on goal per game (1.40), and was second in game-winning goals (4), third in goal per game (.45), and fourth in points per game (1.10). She had a Rice record-breaking and NCAA-leading eight consecutive matches with a goal in 2024 and to no surprise, scored the Owls' opening goal of the 2025 season.

The Owls defended Holloway Field fiercely last season, going 10-1-1 at home. The Owls have a 145-60-24 all-time home record. Rice currently has a 10-game unbeaten streak at home against non-conference opponents, going 9-0-1 in that span.
Dash Legend to South Main
Legendary Houston Dash goalkeeper and Olympic bronze medalist Jane Campbell is set to join the Rice soccer staff ahead of the 2025 season as a volunteer coach. Regarded as one of the greatest keepers in the NWSL, Campbell has appeared in over 150 games with the Houston Dash. She has also been part of the United States National Team, making the Olympic team in 2020 and serving as an alternate in 2024. She was voted as the 2023 NWSL Goalkeeper of the Year.
