Win 5-3 in second game to earn split
Rice wrapped up its 2025 fall exhibition schedule on Sunday by splitting a pair of seven-inning games against McLennan CC, dropping the opener 3-2 and then rallying to win the nightcap 5-3.
In the opening game, Brayden Sharp and Ryland Urbanczyk held the Highlanders off the scoreboard over the first five innings, allowing just one hit while walking four and striking out four. Rice took a 1-0 lead in the first when Cole Green singled home Paul Smith and extended it to 2-0 in the second when Landis Davila singled with two out, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on Hiram Bochachica Jr.'s single to center. But five McLennan relievers held the Owls hitless over the last five innings, creating the opportunity for the Highlanders, which they took advantage of with three runs in the sixth.
In the second game, walks to Colin Robson, Caden Baker, and Tobias Motley to open the first inning loaded the bases for the Owls, and Garet Boehm singled to left to score Robson and Baker. After a McLennan solo homer in the top of the second, Robson answered with a solo shot of his own to extend the lead to 3-1, but the Highlanders scored twice in the fourth to tie things at 3-3.
Trey Duffield laced a double inside the third base bag to lead off the sixth, and he scored the eventual game-winner thanks to Robson, who beat out a bunt up the first base line to move Duffield to third, and then he scored on an error as McLennan attempted to throw out Robson.
Freshman Ethan Sanders earned the win with a scoreless top of the sixth, and Robert Fernandez weathered a McLennan threat in the seventh to pick up the save. The Highlanders had runners at second and third with one out, and after a strikeout, loaded the bases with a walk, but Fernandez ended the threat on a ground ball back to the mound.
Rice added a fifth run in the bottom half of the inning, which was played to allow McLennan to work in one more pitcher. Gunnet Carlson led off the inning with a walk and moved to third on a single by Kutter-Gage Webb, and he scored on a fielder's choice by Masa Chilcutt.
Green was 3x6 in the two games, while Robson and Webb each had two hits.
The Owls will wrap up their fall practice schedule this week with the annual Blue-Gray World Series. Game One is set for Thursday and concludes on Saturday and Sunday.
