Take two from Louisiana
Lafayette, Louisiana--Mason Ashlock drove in three runs while Paul Smith and Cole Green each drove in a pair to lead Rice to a sweep of seven-inning exhibition games against Louisiana on Saturday afternoon.
Ashlock opened the scoring in the first game with a double and came home to score on a home run by Smith as the Owls scored four times. Louisiana cut the margin to 4-3 in the third but Rice added two in the sixth on a two-run double by Cole Green that drove in Smith, who had walked, and Landon West, who had put two runners in scoring position with a double.
Brayden Sharp worked the first two innings in the opener and allowed two runs (one earned) and struck out three while earning credit for the win while Sullivan Brackin was credited with the save, ending the game with a double play.
The Owls jumped out to another 4-0 lead in the second game, scoring four times in the second on singles by Smith and Ashlock and Aric Anderson and Zac Daigre scoring on wild pitches. Louisiana cut the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the second and Rice added a fifth run on back-to-back doubles by Smith and Anderson in the top of the third, but the hosts answered with two in the bottom of the frame to tie the game 5-5.
It stayed 5-5 until the seventh when Garet Boehm drew a leadoff walk off UL reliever Kyrin LeBlanc, moved to third on Anderson's double and scored the eventual winner on a passed ball. Trey Dooley got two strikeouts in the bottom of the seventh to work around a hit batsman and get the save.
The Owls will hold their second exhibition game of the spring in two weeks when they host McClennan JC at noon on Sunday, October 26.
