Reckling Park: Incarnate Word came back from a 4-0 deficit to surge to an 11-5 win over Rice on Tuesday afternoon in a game moved up to avoid anticipated rain in the Houston area later on Tuesday.
The Details: Freshman Jackson Blank made his first career start for Rice and opened with three scoreless innings. He shook off a leadoff walk to strike out the next hitter and then ended the inning with a double play. After needing 17 pitches to get through the first inning, he needed just 14 to move through the second and third. The Owls gave him a lead by scoring four times in the bottom of the third on doubles by Jacob Devenny and Pierce Gallo. Devenny's ball down the right field line brought home Tobias Motley who had singled with one out. Devenny advanced to third on a bunt hit by Ben Dukes, who followed that with a steal of second. Jack Riedel then loaded the bases by walking and Gallo smacked a ball into the gap in right-center to clear the bases. Incarnate Word answered with four runs in the top of the fourth and then took the lead with a pair in the fifth. The Cardinals added one in the sixth then broke the game open with four in the eighth. Rice added a fifth run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Trey Duffield.
Up Next: The Owls will host Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Wednesday night at Reckling, with first pitch set for 6:35. The eight-game homestand wraps up with three games this weekend against UAB, beginning with a 6:35 game on Friday night.
