
Owls Have Great Overall Showing at Duckett Meet

HOUSTON – The Rice men's track and field team had a great team showing at the 20th annual J. Fred Duckett Twilight Meet, with four event titles, nine personal bests from top finishers and 26 top-10 finishers Saturday.
The Owls honored their senior class during the meet, recognizing Jose Acuna, Ese Amata, Daniel Cohen, Travis Dowd, Cadan Hanson, Shaun Kerry, Elliot Metcalf, Andrew Murray, Ronen Oosthuizen, Davis Thames, Gerardo Torres and Sam Welsh.
In his debut with Rice, Ty Hampton shined in the javelin, already moving into second all-time at Rice with a throw of 72.42m.
Shaun Kerry was mere centimeters away from setting a school record in the hammer throw, winning the event with a throw of 67.59m (67.69 is the record), while teammate Cal Abdulky finished second with a throw of 65.63m.
Matt Kumar had a personal best clearance of 5.10m in the pole vault to claim the event title.
On the track, Rice made a splash in the 3000m Steeplechase, with Gus Gannon, Andrew Murray and Grant Samara going 1-2-3 in the event. Riley Kuhlman also had a top finish, ending in seventh. Gannon's time of 8:47.12 moves him into second all-time at Rice.
