HOUSTON, Texas — Rice women's tennis fell to No. 12 San Diego, 4-0, on Sunday at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
Doubles: After falling into an early hole against tough competition in doubles play, the Owls fought but could not reclaim the deficit. On court three, freshmen Divna Ratkovic and Anushka Ashar battled back from a 5-1 deficit with three consecutive points but could not complete the full comeback. Victories by USD at the second and third positions clinched the doubles point for the visitors.
Singles: Facing an uphill battle in singles, including matches against the 49th- and 69th-ranked singles players in the latest ITA rankings, the Owls were unable to make headway in their comeback attempts as the Toreros claimed wins at the first, third and sixth courts to clinch the match. At court four, junior Saara Orav was tied at 2-2 in a first-set tiebreaker when the clinching point was made.
Head coach Elizabeth Schmidt: "Kudos to San Diego. They played a very tough match. They embraced the tough conditions out here and I thought they played smart. They played tough and they beat us today. We're going to learn from it and we'll get better. Now we're going to reset. We have a quick turnaround and we're gonna go out and play two solid teams in UNLV and NAU. Our team will be up for the challenge. We're going to reset from this one and we'll be up for the challenge next week."
Up Next: The Owls head west for a pair of matches in Las Vegas, Nevada. Rice will take on No. 71 UNLV on Friday, March 2, at 10 a.m. (CT), before facing Northern Arizona in a neutral-court match on Saturday, March 3, at 9:30 a.m. (CT).
