
Women's Tennis Sweeps No. 69 UNLV

LAS VEGAS, Nevada — Rice women's tennis recorded its third sweep of the season and its second over a ranked opponent on Friday, defeating No. 69 UNLV, 4-0, at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
Doubles: The Owls laid claim to the doubles point with convincing victories at the top two positions of the lineup. Graduate senior Chie Kezuka and senior Federica Trevisan secured the 6-3 victory at the top spot before junior Saara Orav and sophomore Darya Schwartzman matched the 6-3 win at the second position to clinch the 1-0 lead for Rice heading to singles play.
Singles: Rice kept the momentum in singles action as the Owls won the opening set on five of six courts. Kezuka was the first Owl to finish off her match, winning at the No. 4s, 6-2, 6-3. Schwartzman followed close behind with a victory at the second position, 6-4, 6-3. With the Owls up, 3-0, freshman Divna Ratkovic won the race to the clinching point, posting a 7-5, 6-0 win at court three to secure the win for Rice. With the victory, the Owls improved to 4-6 on the season and boast a 2-2 record against ITA-ranked squads.
Head coach Elizabeth Schmidt: "It was a solid team win today. Conditions were tough with the wind but our team really embraced the challenge and played solid, focused tennis. We're looking forward to another opportunity tomorrow."
Up Next: The Owls remain in Vegas to take on Northern Arizona in a neutral-court matchup tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. (CT) at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
