SAN ANTONIO - The Rice Owls women's cross country team claimed the team title at the UIW Invitational Saturday morning in San Antonio. Rice continued its strong start to the season following a second-place finish a week ago at the Rice Invitational.
Post-Meet Reaction: Head Coach Jim Bevan
"We made a big step forward this week! Lots of personal bests for a 6k: Amelie, Ellie, Emma, Ava, Cici, Alex, and Sutton all with personal bests. We ran in groups and moved up throughout the race. Big breakthroughs by Cici, Katlyn, Ellie and Ava. Amelie continues to perform at a high level, and Emma is so strong for a freshman. We are improving and this group will continue to progress. We were in control of the competition throughout the second half of the race."
Amelie Attenborough led Rice once again with a fourth-place finish with a time of 21:46.3 at the 6k race, pacing a 5:50/k.
Freshman Emma Hourican shined in her Rice debut, finishing eighth with a time of 22:18.8, pacing at 5:59/k. Katlyn Schmeltzer finished tenth (22:30.8) while Ellie Schweiker was 12th (22:35.1) and Ava White rounded out the Rice scorers in 13th (22:27.6).
The Owls will be back in action in two weeks at the Louisville Classic on Sept. 30.
