LOUISVILLE - The Rice Owls women's cross country team competed in the 5k Gold Race at the Live in Lou Classic Saturday morning, hosted by the University of Louisville. Senior Taigen Hunter-Galvan led the Owls, finishing 30th as the Owls finished 21st as a team.
Post-Meet Reaction: Head Coach Jim Bevan
"Today was a great competitive learning situation for our entire team. We do not get so many competitive runners on a tight course like this so often. The only way to improve and learn how to race in these conditions is to experience it and that's why we came here. Taigen had one of her best cross country races ever as did Alex, Emma and Cici. We are getting fitter and need to stay healthy as we work towards our goals this year. The next meet at A&M will be a great test for us moving forward."
Hunter-Galvan led the Owls, finishing 30th with a time of 17:42.0 in her first race of the season.
Amelie Attenborough continued her strong start to the season by finishing 90th with a time of 18:15.3 while Alex Gobran was close behind with a time of 18:46.0. Emma Hourican and Cici Calhoun rounded out the Rice point scorers.
Grand Valley State won the Gold Race with Adams State, Eastern Michigan, Louisville and Purdue rounding out the top five. Clemson's Gladys Chepngetich won the race with a time of 16:43.4
Rice competed against an AAC foe for the second-straight meet, with Memphis also competing in the Gold Race, finishing 33rd as a team. UAB competed in the Blue Race. The Owls saw UTSA earlier this month at the Incarnate Word Invite.
The Owls will be back in action in two weeks at Texas A&M for the Arturo Barrios Invitational on Oct. 13.
