COLLEGE STATION - The Rice women's cross country team competed against top competition from around the nation at the 2023 Arturo Barrios Invitational, hosted by Texas A&M. Senior Taigen Hunter-Galvan led the Owls for a second-straight meet, while Rice finished 23rd out of the 42 teams.
Post Meet Reaction: Head Coach Jim Bevan
"We continue to improve and I was very happy with our progress today. We beat schools that had beaten us earlier at Rice and at Louisville and had a great one to five. Lots of lifetime bests today (Taigen, Amelie, Emma, Alex and Cici). This was a tremendous competition and we are learning and growing. Our trajectory is headed in the right direction, headed into conference."
Hunter-Galvan led the Owls in the 6k race, finishing 90th with a time of 21:03.7 while Amelie Attenborough was close behind in 112th with a time of 21:19.7.
Alex Gobran and Emma Hourican finished within seconds of each other in 128th and 150th, respectively, while Alisa Meraz-Fishbein rounded out the Rice scorers in 178th.
Utah Valley was the team champion, with UCLA, Boston College, Ohio State and UCONN rounding out the top five. Texas Tech's Juliet Cherubet won the race with a time of 19:20.7.
Rice saw several AAC opponents today, with SMU leading the conference teams with a sixth-place finish. Tulane finished 13th, while North Texas (31) and UTSA (33) finished behind the Owls. Tulane's Gemma Rebollo led all AAC opponents, finishing 12th.
The Owls will be back in action on Oct. 28 in Greenville, North Carolina for the 2023 AAC Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships, hosted by East Carolina.
