COLLEGE STATION - The Rice Owls women's cross country team had a strong finish to the season at the 2024 NCAA South Central Regional Friday morning, with freshman Daphne Mayer claiming All-Region honors, while the Owls finished eighth as a team. The race was in College Station, hosted by Texas A&M.
Post-Meet Reaction: Head Coach Jim Bevan
"I thought we performed well today. We were 80 points out of seventh and 100 points ahead of the next school. We had a really good meet with lots of lifetime bests. Daphne was unbelievable today. As a freshman, she earns All-Region honors, joining an elite group of Rice runners to achieve that honor as a freshman. Alex Gobran also had a great race today, along with Heidi, who had a career-best 6k race today. Taigen came back this year and ran her last cross country race for us today, and we are so proud of her and all she's done. She came back stronger and made improvements today from two weeks ago. Amelie and Molly also ran really well. We improved a lot from the last time we were here and from where we were last season and the future is really bright for this team for the years to come. As a team, we couldn't have done any better, and I am so proud of this group."
Mayer led the way for Rice in 24th with a time of 20:16.5 for the 6k race. She has now earned both All-Region and All-Conference honors for her freshman campaign. Another All-Conference honoree two weeks ago, Alex Gobran, was close behind in 35th.
Heidi Nielson (56th), Taigen Hunter-Galvan (63rd) and Amelie Attenborough (77th) rounded out the Rice scorers.
The Owls will now gear up for the upcoming indoor season for track and field.
