Kopec, Gobran Named All-Conference
CHARLOTTE - The Rice women's cross country team shined in the Queen City Saturday morning, placing second at the American Conference Championships in Charlotte, N.C., with Oliwia Kopeć and Alex Gobran collecting All-Conference honors.
Post-Meet Reaction: Head Coach Jim Bevan
"I was ecstatic at our efforts today. I thought we definitely had the best race that we put together all year. The conference was really good this year and Tulane is the best team since we've joined the conference. We have gotten better each time at the conference meet from sixth to third to now second. We raced exceedingly well and did the best we could, and that's the best outcome you can ask for. Oliwia and Alex highlighted our race, finishing third and sixth in a fairly loaded conference up front. Then our pack of Miranda, Heidi and Daphne came through and we moved so far in the last 1200m of the race and won that part going from fourth to second. Molly Humes and Niamh Collins also added the best races that they have had with Rice today. We entered today wanting to do the best we could, and we did that, finishing second to a really, really good Tulane group. I am proud of our team."
Kopeć placed third at the American Conference Championships in back-to-back years to lead the Owls with a time of 20:21.0. Gobran's sixth-place finish with a time 20:36.8 secured her back-to-back years with All-Conference honors along with Kopeć.
Miranda Schriver, followed by Heidi Nielson and Daphne Mayer, all came across in 21st, 22nd, and 23rd, respectively to round out the top five finishers for the Owls.
Rice will be back in action on Friday, Nov. 14, at the NCAA South Central Regional in Fayetteville, Ark.
