HOUSTON - The Rice Owls women's cross country team had a great showing at the 49th annual Rice Invitational, with Alex Gobran winning the women's 4k race Friday afternoon. All five scorers finished in the top six spots as Rice also claimed the team title.
Post-Meet Reaction: Head Coach Jim Bevan
"It's always nice to run in front of your home fans, this is the only time we as a team will get to do so this fall. For us, it was good to be in front of the home crowd and fellow students. I wasn't sure where we were at and afterwards, I'm very happy with the team's performance across the board. All our runners ran exceedingly well and increased their efforts and their drive as the race went along. Our course varies year by year due to the land at Rice, but Alex's performance was outstanding and competes with some of the best ran races here from past years. She's way ahead of where she's been in the past and I am very excited to see what she can do this season."
Junior Gobran led the way in first place after finishing ninth at last year's Rice Invite. Graduate transfer was Miranda Schriver was right behind finishing in second.
All-Conference and All-Region honoree Daphne Mayer finished third, while Brooklyn Crow and Cici Calhoun finished fifth and sixth, respectively, to round out the Rice scorers.
Rice claimed the team title once again, also taking last year's team title.
The Owls will be back in action Saturday morning, Oct. 4, at the Chile Pepper Festival at the University of Arkansas.
