COLUMBIA - The Rice women's cross country team was back in action Friday morning for the team's first 6k of the year at the Gans Creek Classic at the University of Missouri.

"This was our first big race of the year, and with such a young team, many of whom haven't gotten many 6Ks under their belt or were running their first 6K ever, I thought we handled the distance and the large field well. There are plenty of things we can improve on, but I thought everyone fought all the way to the line."
Alex Gobran led the Owls in her first race of the season with a time of 20:48.5, finishing in 61st, the second-best finish of American opponents (Wichita State).
Rice freshman Emma Rohrbach had a strong first 6k in her collegiate career, running a time of 22:08.8 to finish second among the Rice top finishers.
Brooklyn Crow, Niamh Collins and Susie Nestor finished with seven seconds of each other to close out the top five runners for the Owls.
Rice will be back in action on Oct. 3 at the SU Showdown at Southwestern University.
