Schwartzman picks up singles win
George R Brown Tennis Center: Texas fought off an early challenge by Rice in doubles and then rode its depth to a 6-1 win over the Owls on Saturday.
Doubles: Texas took the early advantage with a swift win at the first line, but Darya Schwartzman and Saara Orav evened things with a 6-2 win at the third line. The Longhorns fought their way back from a 3-1 deficit at the second line to take the opening point of the day.
Singles: Texas carried over its momentum into singles taking four of six first sets. The Longhorns clinched the victory by finishing out straight-set wins at the first, third, fourth and fifth lines while also forcing third sets at two and six. Schwartzman, who had rolled to a 6-2 win in her first set, rebounded from a 6-1 loss in the second to take her match with a 6-4 win in the third set to put a point on the board for the Owls.
Elizabeth Schmidt: Obviously, they played solid, a little bit more solid than us today. I think that when we got our chances, they stayed calm and found a way to kind of turn the tables on us and some of the courts. But I think you probably saw why they were two-time defending national champions the way they reacted to stress and pressure.
Up Next: The Owls will hit the training courts next week and return to action on March 15 when they combine wit the men's team to host Texas A&M Corpus Christi at 2 p.m.
