Rice 4, Texas A&M Corpus Christi 0
George R Brown Tennis Center: Rice withstood an early challenge from Texas A&M Corpus Christi in both doubles to come away with a 4-0 win over the previously undefeated Islanders on Wednesday as part of a combined dual with the Rice men's team.
Doubles: The Islanders struck first with a win at the second line, but the Owls answered with wins at the first and third positions to take the early lead.
Singles: In search of three points to clinch the match, Rice jumped to early leads by quickly taking first sets on three courts. Maria Budin and Federica Trevisan maintained their momentum into their second sets, dropping just one game each to push the lead to 3-0 and then closed out the match when Darya Schwartzman emerged with a 6-1, 6-3 win at the fourth line.
Elizabeth Schmidt: "Overall it was a solid match from our team. We knew that they were 11-0 coming in and were feeling pretty confident. They like to play physical, grinding style and they make you play a lot of balls. We knew we were going to be tested. It was nice to get that doubles point and then to get out to some quick leads. I thought we did a nice job of today keeping our foot on the pedal, and sticking with it against a team that was going to make you play one extra ball. (up 3-0) there were some battles on the remaining three courts and I think they shifted the momentum a little bit on court four. But Darya did an excellent job to stay in the course when they were really trying to get that momentum shifted."
Up Next: The Owls are on the road this weekend for a pair of Conference USA matches this weekend in Charlotte, North Carolina. They will face North Texas on Saturday and then 30th-ranked Charlotte on Sunday.
