First of two in San Diego
In Brief: Rice opens a two-match road trip to San Diego on Friday when the Owls face UCLA at The Santaluz Club in San Diego and then San Diego State on Saturday at the Aztec Tennis Center. Friday's match with UCLA was scheduled to replace a match with the University of San Diego which was canceled after the Toreros qualified for the ITA Indoor Nationals.
How to Follow: Updates from the UCLA match will be available on the Rice tennis twitter account. Live scores and video will be available for Saturday's match at San Diego State and links will be posted on the Owls' schedule when available.
The Owls: Rice is 2-2 so far this season, posting a 7-0 wins over Lamar at home and Louisiana indoors at AD IN, while falling 4-3 on the road to Baylor and 7-0 to #3 Texas A&M at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
UCLA: The Bruins are 1-2 this year, opening the season with a win over Loyola Marymount and then dropping a pair of matches at the ITA Kickoff Weekend Miami Regional, 4-3 to Iowa State and 4-1 to FIU. They had road matches vs. Saint Mary's and California rained out last weekend. This will be the fourth meeting between the schools since 2006, with UCLA winning all three. The last two have come under head coach Elizabeth Schmidt, who was an All-American under Bruins' head coach Stella Sampras Webster at UCLA in 1997 and was a three-time all-conference selection. Their first meeting was a 7-0 UCLA win on the Bruins' home court in 2010 and their most recent contest was a 4-0 UCLA win in the Round of 16 at the NCAA Championship in 2012.
San Diego State: The Aztecs are 2-1 this season, falling to #14 USC on the road to open the season and then defeating #40 Alabama and UC San Diego at home. Last season, they won their first Mountain West title since 2003 to advance to the NCAA Championship. They have won five of the previous six duals with the Owls, including a 5-2 decision in the most recent meeting in 2007. Rice's lone win in the series came in 2005 (5-2).
Notable:
• Rice is 2-2 in doubles this season and is 2-0 when winning the point.
