Rosengard Slam Keys Owls' Sweep of Bearkats
2/28/2023 10:05:00 PM | Baseball
First back-to-back sweeps of season series since 1999
The Details: Rice starter Tom Vincent worked his way out of a jam in the bottom of the first, striking out Clayton Chadwick with two on, and then retired the next six in a row to keep the game scoreless after three innings. Pierce Gallo opened the fourth inning with a single and came home to score on a double by Manny Garza. Garza was thrown out trying to stretch his double to a triple, but Drew Holderbach, Nathan Becker, and Connor Walsh walked on a combined 11 pitches to load the bases. Ben Royo flew out for the second out, leaving it up to Rosengard, who was making his second start in right in place of the injured Guy Garibay Jr. He lofted a 2-1 pitch over the left field wall to clear the bases for Rice's first grand slam on the road in nearly four years and match his RBI total from last season. Sam Houston struck back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, but Rice scored five runs over the next two innings on the way to the Owls' fourth consecutive win in the series and their sixth straight at Don Sanders Stadium. Rice has swept the series with Sam Houston in consecutive years for the first time since winning all three in 1996 and both games in 1997 & 1999. Vincent, J.D. McCracken, Matthew Linskey, Krishna Raj, and Ryland Urbanczyk combned to hold a Sam Houston offense that came into the game hitting .337 to just three hits. Linskey picked up the win by working 3.1 innings in relief.
