Doubleheader closes out series on Saturday
Stanford: Second-ranked Stanford answered an early Rice challenge with five late runs to take a 6-3 decision in the opening game of a three-game series on Friday.
The Details: Rice provided starter Parker Smith with an early 2-0 lead and the sophomore worked out of some early trouble to make that lead hold up until the sixth when the Cardinal took a 4-2 lead on three unearned runs and then added two insurance runs after Rice had cut the lead to 4-3. Smith worked around a one-out single in the bottom of the first and then found himself with runners at second and third with one out in the second. He efficiently ended the threat on seven pitches, striking out Charlie Saum and Owen Cobb and his teammates rewarded his efforts with some two-out efficiency in the next half inning. Max Johnson opened the inning with a walk, and after a strikeout, Jack Riedel singled. Both runners advanced on a ground out by Manny Garza and came home to score on a single by Drew Holderbach. The Cardinal cut the margin to 2-1 in the fourth, but Smith rallied to strand a pair of runners and maintain the lead. After allowing six men on base in the first three innings, Stanford starter Quinn Matthews shut the Owls' offense down, retiring the next 10 in a row, and left the game with one out in the seventh leading 4-2, thanks to three unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth. Pierce Gallo greeted Cardinal reliever Brandt Pacer with a long home run to left center to cut the lead to 4-3, but Stanford answered with a pair of runs in its half of the seventh, and reliever Matt Scott retired the last six Owls in order to pick up the save.
Up Next: The series will wrap up a day earlier than originally scheduled as the teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday to avoid the anticipated rain showers forecast for Sunday. This will be the second time the schools have played a doubleheader. Their series at Stanford in 2010 opened with a single game on Friday and then a doubleheader on Saturday due to similar rain predictions for the final day of the weekend series.
