Houston: Rice started fast and never looked back, opening its Conference USA schedule with a 7-0 win over FAU at the George R. Brown Tennis Center on Sunday.
Doubles: Rice came out blazing in doubles, racing to the first point of the day without dropping a game at the first and third lines.
Singles: Rice took four of six first sets in singles to increase the pressure and made quick work of securing the clinching points with straight set wins at the first, third and fifth lines in the lineup. Diae El Jardi and Allison Zipoli set the table for Maria Budin to deliver the fourth and deciding point with wins at three and one. Sydney Berlin and Saara Orav rallied from opening set losses to win deciding supersets after the match was decided. Federica Trevisan completed the sweep with a hard fought 7-6, 7-5 win at the second line.
Elizabeth Schmidt: "I'm really proud of the team for the quality of play we displayed today. We were gritty and tough on every court. I'm looking forward to continuing to build on this effort as we move on to the next week."
Up Next: Rice will host a combined men's and women's dual with Texas A&M Corpus Christi at 2 p.m. on Wednesday and Sam Houston on Saturday at 11 at GRBTC.
