Host Tulane next Saturday
Nashville, Tennessee: Vanderbilt withstood a strong challenge from Rice at the start of singles and defeated the Owls 6-1 at the Currey Tennis Pavilion at the Lummis Family Tennis Center on Sunday.
Doubles: The Commodores took the early advantage with a win at the second line before Wes Barnett and Trinity Grear took a 6-4 decision for their first career win at the first doubles line. Vanderbilt then used a late break to take the opening point at the third line.
Singles: Unlike their loss at #21 Middle Tennessee where the Owls saw the outcome decided early, Rice jumped to an early advantage by taking the first sets in three of five matches in action and seeing a fourth extended to a tie-breaker. Emir Sendogan, who suffered his first loss of the season on Friday, shook off a second-set loss to win the final three games of his third set and improve to 7-1 on the season.
Efe Ustundag: "On paper, we came into the weekend as the underdogs in every matchup and when you are in those situations you have to take every opportunity your opponent gives you because that may be all you'll get. Today's match was the opposite of Friday's. We came out strong in doubles and it was good to see T (Trinity Grear) and Wes get that win at one, but we couldn't get a hold when we needed it at three to get the point. It was good to see Emir put Friday behind him, get a great start to his match, and then answer when he was challenged. We knew this weekend was going to be a tough challenge and hopefully, we can get healthier this week because we have another tough challenge ahead with Tulane on Saturday."
Up Next: The Owls have a pair of upcoming matches at the George R. Brown Tennis Center, hosing Tulane next Saturday at 11 a.m. and then combining with the Rice women's team to host Texas A&M Corpus Christi on February 22.
