Owls Take Down No. 64 Memphis

HOUSTON – The Rice men's tennis team defeated No. 64 Memphis 4-2, narrowly beating an incoming storm Saturday afternoon at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
The No. 57 Owls improved to 13-6 overall and completed a weekend sweep. Rice is now 8-0 against conference opponents this season.
Memphis struck first in doubles when Sam Reeve and Lasse Rensing defeated Yair Sarouk and Kabeer Kapasi 6-3 on court two. Rice evened the score as Tommy Czaplinski and Rafael Botran earned a 6-3 win over Marko Milosavljevic and Obrad Markovski on court three.
The doubles point came down to court one, where Petro Kuzmenok and Santiago Navarro defeated Moritz Kudernatsch and Maxime Dubouch 6-4 to give the Owls the early 1-0 lead.
Kuzmenok extended the Rice advantage in singles with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Kudernatsch on court three. Memphis got on the board when Kapasi fell 6-4, 6-3 to Leandro Zgraggen on court four.
Noey Do pushed the Owls closer to victory with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Keoni Puig on court six.
Memphis trimmed the deficit to 3-2 when Navarro dropped a three-set match to Dubouch, 2-6, 6-3, 6-0. Gabriel Porras secured the match for Rice on court two, closing with a dominant third set to defeat Milosavljevic 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.
Play briefly continued after the clinch before a lightning strike halted the match. Botran was in position to take court five, leading Markovski 6-3, 1-6, 5-2.
Rice will close its regular season on Wednesday when it hosts SMU at 5 p.m. on Senior Night. Prior to the match, seniors Kapasi, Navarro and Sarouk will be recognized.
