CHARLOTTE – The Rice men's tennis team defeated Charlotte 4-2 on Friday morning at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex.
The Owls secured their 12th doubles point of the season to take the early lead. Yair Sarouk and Kabeer Kapasi defeated Moritz Muenster and Vasco Prata 6-4. Tommy Czaplinski and Rafael Botran clinched the point for Rice with a 7-6 win over Andres Medus and Massimo Pizzigoni. Petro Kuzmenok and Santiago Navarro were tied 6-6 but leading the tiebreaker 6-5 when play was halted.
Charlotte opened singles with a win on court four to even the match. Kapasi fell 1-6, 1-6 to Muenster. Botran answered with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Medus to give the Owls the lead again.
Noey Do extended the advantage with a 7-5, 6-1 win over E. Sanchez Bronsetti on court six. Navarro dropped a 4-6, 6-7 decision to Ivan Dreycopp on court two to bring Charlotte within one.
No. 49 Kuzmenok clinched the match for Rice, rallying after dropping the opening set 0-6 to defeat No. 118 Prata 6-1, 6-4 in the final two sets.
Gabriel Porras was in the third set when play was halted (6-2, 6-7, 0-1).
Rice will face UTSA at 10 a.m. Saturday in Charlotte.
