Owls Fall to Tulsa in American Conference Title Match

TULSA, Okla. – Top-seeded and No. 49-ranked Rice fell 4-1 to No. 6 seed Tulsa in the American Conference Championship, ending the Owls' chance to repeat as conference champions.
The defending champions closed the season with a 15-8 record.
Tulsa secured the doubles point, marking Rice's first doubles loss since March 2 against Baylor. Gus Tettable and Victor Rosetto defeated Tommy Czaplinski and Rafael Botran 6-3, while Timothy Seger and Nikita Volonski topped Yair Sarouk and Kabeer Kapasi 6-4 on court two. On court one, Petro Kuzmenok and Santiago Navarro led 5-4.
In singles, Kapasi evened the match with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Ruben Fernandez Ruiz on court four. Tulsa answered with three straight singles victories to clinch the title. Noey Do fell 6-1, 6-2 to Victor Tosetto on court six, and Navarro dropped a 6-3, 6-4 decision to Seger on court two. Kuzmenok rallied from a 5-2 deficit in the second set to force a tiebreak before falling 6-3, 7-6.
When play was halted, Rafael Botran was tied 4-4 in the third set on court three after splitting the first two sets 6-2, 1-6. Gabriel Porras was trailing 6-0, 3-6, 4-1 in the third set on court five.
Rice now awaits a potential at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
